When visitors come to the UK from overseas, they all want to see quaint English villages where they can walk along cobbled streets and spot thatched cottages. Those of you that live in England will know that there are plenty of these little villages dotted all over the country, there are villages hiding in rural landscapes, tiny hamlets on riversides and plenty of cute villages by the coast. We’ve put together five our favourite quaint and picturesque traditional English villages for you to explore!

Shaftesbury, Dorset


You’ll probably recognise this from the Hovis bread adverts, Gold Hill in Shaftesbury is in the running to be one of the most photographed villages in the whole of Britain.
Dorset is a wonderful coastal county in the south west of England, so if you find yourself in the region, be sure to visit Shaftesbury. While you’re here, why not attend a Dorset Wildlife Trust Talk or go to the famous Dorset County Show

Castle Combe, Wiltshire


You might not think if, but this quintessential English village in the middle of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is also home to a race track. It is regularly named as one of the prettiest villages in the county. You’ll be sure of a beautiful sight wherever you are in the Cotswolds, so make sure to book onto one of the Walks in the Cotswolds, the Cotswolds Show  is another must attend event, so make sure to check that one out in the summer!

Castleton, Peak District


This tiny village is beautiful and lies near the locally named “shivering Mountain”. The whole of the Peak District is beautiful and there are lots of great places to stay and things to do. If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at TrekFest  which starts in Castleton or the Peak District Challenge.

Staithes, North Yorkshire


This wonderful little village looks out across the North Sea and tradition is such a big part of village life you’ll find that houses are named rather than numbered. Yorkshire is a big place, but if you fancy trekking about the county, head to Harrogate for the Fireworks Championships 

Clovelly, Devon


Clovelly is a gem in the north of Devon and is one of the region’s most photographed place, you won’t be surprised why when you get there! Devon is a bustling county in the south west of England and there are plenty of things to see and do. Why not visit the nearby town of Cullompton for the Spring Festival
