Pretty much the moment Halloween is over, you’ll notice shops and attractions will start putting up their Christmas decorations and playing the Buble Christmas hits on repeat. We all know that Christmas is a joyous and special time, especially for those of you spending it with family and friends and we all know that the UK is home to some of the most amazing Christmas markets in Europe, but that’s not all we have to offer over the winter season. Here are a selection of interesting things you can do this Christmas!

Enter a fairytale at Chatsworth House

This year guests visiting Chatsworth House in the Peak District will get to immerse themselves in a fairy tale world, there will be a whole host of fairy tale scenes woven throughout the house and families can listen to live story tellers, as well as join in a trail to find a baby dragon!

Carol singing in a cave

Ever joined in a carol service in a cave? Now you can! If you’re in Devon over the Christmas period, be sure to take part in some traditional carols in a less traditional setting, Kents Cave in Torquay host Carols in the Caves annually and there is something very special about singing carols underground in such a historic place.

Illuminations

Illuminations events take place all over the country where people come together to see some fantastic light displays. Longleat House in Wiltshire has the Festival of Light taking place once again.

There is a similar event taking place in Swanage and Babacombe’s Model Village in Torquay also has an Evening Illuminations event. For something truly special, why not take a trip to Westonbirt Arboretum for their Enchanted Christmas celebration?

Take a steam train ride

There is something very nostalgic and strangely Christmassey about taking a steam train ride, luckily, there are plenty of tour operators around the UK who offer steam train rides, some of them even give you a mince pie and the chance to see Santa! Take a trip to one of the UK’s best Christmas Markets by riding a steam train from Woking to the Bath Christmas Market head to Paignton to take part in the Santa Express or join the Great Central Railway Nottingham for a steam train trip through the beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside.

Of course, there are plenty of other events taking place all over the UK to celebrate this festive season, from Christmas Markets, to light switch ons, to pantomimes to craft workshops… There is really something for everyone, be sure to take a look at our full list of events here!
