What could be better, you’re on your jolly holidays, you’ve got loads to do, the sun is shining and you want to take in the culture. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to sacrifice being outside to enjoy a bit of theatre, especially not in London, where you can join in an open air performance, and the best bit? Some of them are free.

Here’s a selection of the best free open air theatre shows you can see in London this summer.

Canary Wharf’s Westferry Circus
Every summer the gardens at Westferry Circus in Canary Wharf become a theatre, this year there are several Shakespeare plays for you to enjoy, such as The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet and there are other classics, The Importance of Being Ernest and A Woman of No Importance can be caught there too.

Circus at Somerset House
In the grand courtyard at Somerset House, just off the Strand, you can catch two weekends worth of live circus performances called Circus Sampler, which demonstrates how much circus acts have changed over the years. Catch it at the end of July and beginning of August.

National Theatre
For five weekends over the summer, the National Theatre will have performances taking place outside the building in South Bank where there will be a full line up of free theatre and cultural events. You’ll be able to catch musicals, dance acts, DJs and more. Make sure to look out for it from the 13th July.

The Scoop
Right outside the Mayor’s office on the river front you’ll find an outdoor auditorium where you will find performances taking place on the steps for free. The performances run between 8th August and 2nd September.
