Celebration day in Sudbury

About

Join us on the 14th May to celebrate Local History Month with a guided tour of the Sudbury Village, led by Staff, Volunteers and residents past and present.

Sitting at the most southern part of the Derbyshire Dales, Sudbury is a delightful former estate village to nearby Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood. The name, Sudbury, is of Saxon origins and means 'south fortification'. Even before the Norman conquest there was a village here.

The tour will be split into four key areas of interest, with each group moving between the locations, including; All Saints Church, the Village Street, Sudbury Hall and Sudbury Gasworks.

Sudbury Gasworks is a Grade II 'at risk' building of 1874 attributed to noted country house architect, George Devey. The original purpose of the gasworks was to manufacture gas from coal.

Representatives from Sudbury Gasworks Restoration Trust will talk to attendees about the impact Devey had on the design of the village, including the Hall, Gasworks and many of the listed properties around the village.

Refreshments and plant sale provided by the Friends of Sudbury Gasworks.
