Peggy's 1st Birthday with Arnie Somogyi's "Jump Monk"

About

24 August 2019 I 7pm - 10pm
Peggy's Skylight, Nottingham

'We first saw Arnie's group whilst still in the development stage of bringing Peggy's Skylight to life, and absolutely loved the show! Our venue owes it's name to the Charles Mingus song "Peggy's Blue Skylight", so we're honoured and excited to bring this UK jazz supergroup for a very special celebration...'

Led by bassist Arnie Somogyi, Jump Monk pays tribute to two of the greatest composers in jazz: Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.

An outstanding double bass player, Arnie Somogyi is a much sought after musician, composer and bandleader. He's performed and recorded with a wide variety of high profile artists, appearing on over 40 albums & numerous film soundtracks.

His 'Jump Monk' project is dedicated to performing the music of two of the greatest jazz composers and musicians, pianist Thelonious Monk and bass player Charles Mingus. Named after Mingus's musical tribute to Monk, 'Jump Monk', the Quintet captures the freedom of interpretation and drive that characterises the music of two of the most important and colourful figures in jazz.

This stellar line-up includes some of the leading figures in British jazz today. Expect passion and fireworks from the front line, pushed on by one of the best rhythm sections around.

Arnie Somogyi - bass

Alan Barnes - alto saxophone

Jeremy Price - trombone

Mark Edwards - piano

Clark Tracey - drums

...Jump Monk, is led from the back by Arnie Somogyi, a bassist who doesn't mark time but makes it sing, urging his fellows on in the most vital way on an array of Monk's tunes [with extra Mingus] aided by Clark Tracey and the ever adroit pianist Mark Edwards. Add in Jeremy Price's trombone and the searing alto of Toni Kofi, with his flame thrower tone and vehement attack, and you have music of real consequence. Haitian Fight Song had it! - Peter Vacher, Jazzwise.
