Small girl walks on moon

About

Jetting away to the sun may be out of reach, but if you bring the family to Peterborough Cathedral this summer you could be ‘walking on the moon’ instead!

The Cathedral will be hosting a giant representation of the lunar surface, created by the renowned sculptor and artist Peter Walker using imagery from NASA. At Peterborough Cathedral it will transform a huge area of the floor in the north and south transepts, and under the tower, into an image of the moon’s terrain, showing all the craters and details of the lunar rock. Visitors will be able to walk on the surface and even locate the place where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made their Apollo 11 landing in 1969. It will be a great spot to take a selfie!

The 36m x 7m art installation, entitled One Small Step was originally created to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing in 2019, when it was shown at Lichfield Cathedral.

On selected dates from 30th July, you can also climb the ancient stone steps and see One Small Step from above, then keep going up to see the amazing view from the top of the central tower.

Moon with a View trips will take place on  Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting on 30th July,  from 10.30am (last climb at 1.30pm).

These times may be subject to variation.
