Mayor Making Ceremony

About

Portsmouth Guildhall will once again host the ceremony to formally elect the new Lord Mayor of Portsmouth.

Mayor Making is a traditional ceremony where the new Lord Mayor of Portsmouth is formally elected at the annual meeting of the council. Doors open at 9am and guests are asked to be seated by 9:30am ahead of the ceremony starting at 10am.

The new mayor is chosen by city councillors, who put forward their suggestions before a vote is taken. Once a mayor is chosen they take up the post and nominate the charities for which they will be raising funds throughout the year.

As part of the ceremony the new Lord Mayor will be granted the Keys to the City and presented with the Portsmouth Sword - a symbol of the interdependence between the city and the Royal Navy. It's also the chance to honour people making a real change to the city, with a series of Civic Awards that recognise those people who have improved the local community.

Civic Awards are presented by the Lord Mayor to local residents who have made a large contribution to the city.

Tickets will be available from Central Library, Cosham Library and Guildhall Box Office from 10 April.

Guide Prices

Free, but advance booking required. Tickets available from Portsmouth Guildhall, Portsmouth Central Library or Cosham Library.
