Join us at HOME to celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 with events happening on the day in our building and online, plus highlights from our regular programme which celebrate women making cinema, theatre and art.
Programmed by our film team for International Women’s Day 2022 at HOME, is Cinema Palestino/ Between Heaven and Earth, directed by Najwa Najjar. The film will be followed by a discussion with Professor Anandi Ramamurthy, Cinema Palestino & Sheffield Hallam University, and Dr Ruth Abou Rached, The University of Manchester.
In Theatre 2, we have a special International Women’s Day with Mothers Who Make event. Join us from 10.30am to 1pm for a celebration of the amazing, creative mothers in Manchester with tea, coffee and cake, and an invitation to talk about your artform.
Later on in the month, on Sat 12 Mar as part of Celebrating Syria 2022, lisa luxx, a writer, performer, essayist and activist of British and Syrian heritage will be presenting Eating the Copper Apple a soul-searching tale of identity, weaving together politics and dreams, loss and fulfilment into a one-woman verse play that explores adoption and mixed-heritage. lisa luxx will also be hosting a workshop on Sun 13 Mar: Weaving: Using Poetic Patterns in Long Form Narrative.
Also in our theatre you’ll find Rice, a show brimming with wickedly humorous observations on globalisation, politics and family. This is the UK premiere of a powerful new play from Asian-Australian writer Michele Lee, which has won numerous awards including the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Original Stage Play.
New film releases directed by women include: Ali & Ava directed by Clio Barnard, A Banquet the debut feature from director Ruth Paxton, River a documentary directed by Jennifer Peedom and The Tinderbox directed by Gillian Mosely.
This year’s ¡Viva! Spanish & Latin American Festival, alongside films directed by women, we’re pleased to welcome special guests to HOME for Q+As after their film screenings including Spanish filmmaker Icíar Bollaín who will be joining us on Wed 23 Mar for the screening of Maixabel and actor Maria Morera joins us for a Q&A following the screening of Libertad on Thu 31 Mar.
Looking further ahead to our Spring Summer 2022 Theatre Season join us in Theatre 2 for Oh Mother, a show that follows RashDash and their mums explore having and becoming mothers. In Theatre 1 we have the UK and European premiere of Claudia Rankine’s first published play, The White Card, directed by Natalie Ibu. As we head into the summer, we have Vice Versa, commissioned by HOME and Eclipse Theatre it’s a one-woman show majestically combined with 3D sound-design, stunning visuals and physical/verbal story telling.
