In 2014, a project was launched at Newcastle University to develop a new light-based therapy for focal epilepsy combining a gene therapy and brain implant. Illuminating the Self features original commissioned work from Susan Aldworth and Andrew Carnie in response to this ground-breaking science and engineering project.
The work explores the science of optogenics, the boundaries and ethics of therapies within the brain as well as the day to day reality of living with epilepsy. A companion exhibition will also be running at Vane Gallery.
