This church, built as a Primitive Methodist Chapel, has recently been extended but retains original features. The Open Day will include an illustrated talk and a display of the history of the church and area. Refreshments will be available.
This Primitive Methodist Chapel, built in 1903, had been very little altered until it was extended and modernised in response to housing development nearby. Original features have been retained and these include the pulpit, the stained glass window, tram style pews and numerous chapel hat pegs.
The Chapel will be open on Saturday (10th September) from 1000-1400 and there will be displays about the history of the chapel and the area. A talk in the evening - “What’s in a Name?” - will explore the names of the new estate roads and explain how they relate to the history of Matlock Moor and the Lumsdale Valley. Home-made refreshments will be available, including soup and a roll at lunchtime. Children of all ages are very welcome (there will be crafts and a colouring challenge for them) but note that the Chapel is situated on a busy main road.
For further information see the church website.
Every September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.
The church is beside the Chesterfield Road (A632) out of Matlock at the junction with Quarry Lane between the turning for Highfields School and Matlock Golf Club. There are nearby bus-stops serving buses from Sheffield, Chesterfield, Clay Cross and Matlock.
There are bus stops close to the church. Parking on the main road is difficult but visitors can be set down and there is a lay-by 140 metres up the hill (with a footpath on the other side of the road).
