We start from Renishaw for this opportunity to walk a good length of the Chesterfield Canal, with contrasting parts that are unrestored, partly restored and fully restored.
Restoration is imminent on the first section and the route then uses field paths that can be overgrown and uneven, though most of the route has a good level surface. The Staveley Puddle Bank offers wide views and is another spot where work will hopefully start before very long.
The next stop will be Hartington Harbour, where a great deal of work has been completed, but is stalled because of continuing uncertainty about the route of the HS2 railway.
On the fully restored 5 miles from Staveley, there are two cafes (with toilets) and the walk will pass by the two trip boats operated by the Canal Trust.
The final section follows the river section of the canal alongside the massive Waterside development scheme before ending back in the town centre.
