Drawing Words is a British Council exhibition of contemporary UK children's book illustration now on display at Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books in Ouseburn Newcastle. The exhibition will be on display from Tuesday 16 July 2019 - February 2020. Drawing Words has been curated by much-loved and award-winning artist, writer and former Children’s Laureate Lauren Child (2017 – 2019) and showcases some of the most exciting children's book illustrations from UK artists and illustators. Explore work by 10 illustrators including Emily Hughes (Wild, Flying Eye Books), Yasmeen Ismail (Time for Bed, Fred! Bloomsbury) and Neal Layton (Emily Brown and the Thing, Hodder Children’s Books),
Alongside finished work from these illustrators, this is an opportunity to take a closer look at archive material selected by Seven Stories which explores the creative process leading to the final illustrations, including favourite items drawn from the Seven Stories archive by Lauren Child.
Seven Stories has commissioned Cumbria-based artist Hannah Fox to create a playful, interactive and imaginative space designed especially for children to respond to themes of the exhibition. Daydream and stare out of the window while your imagination runs free in the especially created, immersive play space.
Drawing Words features work created by local young people at workshops hosted by Seven Stories and Hannah Fox at Byker Community Trust. Nine participating children were asked to explore their imaginary world based on Laura Carlin’s collage techniques in A World of Your Own and their finished designs are on display in the gallery.
