Beethoven Symphony No. 3 'Eroica'
London's Aurora Orchestra has earned its spurs as a leading international ensemble by flouting the conventions of how concerts should be presented, most tellingly in its series of works played entirely from memory. Aurora's revolutionary approach couldn't be better suited to Beethoven's Third Symphony, which was bigger, bolder and more expressive than anything that had gone before. Their performance of the 'Eroica' was one of the hits of the 2017 BBC Proms, aided by an interactive introduction from broadcaster Tom Service and conductor Nicholas Collon, who reunite to dismantle and rebuild Beethoven's masterpiece before a performance of the whole symphony.
The first half of the concert brings a return from violinist Nicola Benedetti, whose dynamic performances and advocacy for music in education have made her one the most influential artists. Here she performs Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, a masterpiece cut from more delicate cloth than Beethoven's, its fleet-footed virtuosity a far cry from the showy fireworks of its contemporaries, built on seamless lyricism and peerless melodies.
