58th Annual Conference of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG)

About

Marketing Manchester, in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), helped secure the prestigious 58th Annual Conference of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) in 2019.

Worth £2.5m to Greater Manchester's economy the conference will bring together more than 1,000 leading clinicians, physicists and other practitioners in particle therapy to share the latest clinical, scientific and industrial developments and showcase the latest technology.

Manchester's bid was presented to the PTCOG steering group at this year's conference in Prague. The bidding consortium included The Christie, UCLH, Marketing Manchester, Manchester Central, Kenes Group and the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The bid demonstrated extensive support including letters from the Secretary of State for Health, the Chief Executive of NHS England, the Royal College of Radiographers, CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research), the National Physics Laboratory and Visit Britain.

Dr Ranald Mackay, director of Christie physics and medical engineering and Manchester Conference Ambassador, said:

"We are thrilled to be hosting the 2019 PTCOG in Manchester.  The Christie is very excited to be developing the national proton therapy service in partnership with UCLH. Our centre will open in 2018 and PTCOG in 2019 will bring the best clinicians and scientists from the particle therapy community to Manchester and ensure that the NHS service is world leading."

Sheona Southern, Marketing Manchester's Managing Director said:

"We are excited to be hosting the world's leading experts in proton beam therapy. It is fitting they will be meeting in Manchester in 2019, as it was here Ernest Rutherford discovered the proton exactly one century ago.

"Delegates will discover Manchester is still at the cutting-edge of science and they will be able to visit the brand new Proton Beam Centre as part of the conference programme.

"This bid is the result of 12 months of intensive collaboration and demonstrates the immense value of partnership working. The incredible team at The Christie are superb conference ambassadors for Manchester and we look forward to supporting them over the coming years."
