In the summer, the Metro revealed new research listing the UK’s most popular destinations for day trips. Its no surprise that the list includes traditional coastal towns, like Southend, Margate, St Ives and Scarborough but what is a bit more surprising is that the most popular destinations aren’t actually near the seaside, with cities Birmingham and Manchester seeing an increasing in day trip tourism.

The research was put together by train ticket company, Trainline. Their data science director, Fergus Weldon, told the Metro: “Its great to see that Brits are falling back in love with the great British coast and are going back to places visited as a child for their UK trips and travel this year.”

So where did they find were the most popular places for UK day trips? The top ten is listed below:

  1. Southend on Sea
  2. Margate
  3. Birmingham
  4. Manchester
  5. Wigan
  6. Scunthorpe
